- TUITIONAn Achievable Artistic Reading Project for the Arabian Nights Starts 4 June | £31 | Online Book now 1001 Nights: An Achievable Artistic Reading Project for the Arabian Nights £31 per month Each week in class we discuss 7 nights. If you would like to join this class please feel free to do so at any point; email me in advance to discover what night we're up to. You read 7 nights per week. (Or as many nights it takes to make up the full month of 28, 29, 30 or 31 nights.) We meet online once a week, 4 times per month. Then we talk. All of life is here. You get inspired. Fill your cup in a structured half hour. We are all Dunyazad. I’ve read the entire Nights a few times now: it’s part of my Slade School of Art research and epic project - a contemporary visual interpretation of the Nights. I have favourite stories; I am excited to share those. I’ve thought about the Nights now for the better part of a decade and it was the first book I remember as a child and early reader. This is an artistic reading group but you need not be an artist to join. The Nights tangent several spheres apart from art and literature including theatre, film, dance, music, opera, ballet and more. There are several translations and there will be several more: like that other world-famous book that changed the course of Western civilisation forever (the Bible), the Nights are a work in progress. We’ll use the Malcom C Lyons Penguin translation, the current most complete translation into English. As new translations appear we will take them into account; if you read other languages I encourage you to read those concurrently (for instance there are good French, German and Italian translations; of course they are translated into many of the world’s languages including Chinese). Midweek Wednesday nights, 10pm London time Upcoming Sessions Dates: 4 June 2025 to 25 June 2025 Total of 4 sessions • Wednesday 4 June 10pm - 11pm London time • Wednesday 11 June 10pm - 11pm London time • Wednesday 18 June 10pm - 11pm London time • Wednesday 25 June 10pm - 11pm London time Book nowLike
- TUITIONPolish your paintings Starts 4 June | £195 | Online Book now FINISHING SCHOOL The Finishing School of finishing paintings For acquiring the correct brush etiquette in completing one’s paintings Deportment for one’s portfolio Polish your paintings and varnish your soul To mark entry into charmed and framed society See you at the finissage Q. When is a painting finished? A. When it’s the deadline. (Joke - I’d be interested in your answers!) Although these sessions are not explicitly taught classes, and there is no new material covered, I will be painting alongside you and the sessions are themed. To get the most out of them you may choose a painting-in-progress of yours with a similar theme. I may go slightly faster than usual and it might feel intense; at other times it might go more slowly than usual due to thinking and contemplating. Alternatively you are welcome to bring along any painting you like at any stage of the process, although one that is en route to finishing is recommended. It is a chance for you to catch up on that pile of unfinished work and get some focused painting done with some gentle guidance in the spirit of the traditional kitabkhana, where students, apprentices, masters, calligraphers and occasionally poets all worked in the same space. Open to former and current students with works in progress. Current students may think of them as more relaxed catch-up sessions in between regular classes, which takes the pressure off ‘homework’; former students may benefit from the chance to reconnect with miniature painting and fall in love with it all over again! [If you are interested in actual taught classes, please see my other available classes in the ‘Upcoming’ section for the current curriculum.] Dig up old works, uncover your avalanches and work on completion! £195 for the month All Monday evenings All London time Time slots may vary according to the season, please check the page 7pm to 8pm (this one may not always be possible, we'll see) 8pm to 9pm 9pm to 10pm 10pm to 11pm 11pm to midnight (this time slot may or may not continue in winter as it gets dark, we’ll see) To keep things fresh, we can vary the themes on a weekly basis. - TUITIONDouble Brother Movies: Sharing our learning about the world through making scrolls and movies Starts 5 June | £45 | Online Book now We are 2 brothers making scrolls and movies while learning about the world and sharing all this via online Zoom sessions. EVERYONE IS WELCOME! Children and adults and kidults are all invited to join us. We are children teaching and sharing with you! How it works: There are 8 major themes in each cycle. The 8 themes are: 1. Universe 2. Earth & Microlife 3. Ocean 4. Plants & Fungi 5. Birds, Dinosaurs and Reptiles 6. Animals 7. History and Culture 8. Science and Technology, Engineering, Maths Each month has a different theme, so the whole cycle takes 8 months (roughly equivalent to an academic year), which is then repeated. This also gives a chance for the themes to fall under different seasons so we learn different things. Each month has 4 interactive Zoom sessions (1 per week). The 4 sessions are all different and relate to the theme; nothing is ever repeated in exactly the same way although learning is a spiral staircase (going upwards!) and as children we are excited about seeing connections in everything. Each session takes a particular topic related to the theme and expands on it in detail. We activate our learning by making something related to the topic and recording it in our handmade horizontal handscroll, which is also a long timeline of the universe and is filmic in its extreme landscape form. On our scrolls we might draw, paint, cut and stick things, 3D... We’ll use things around the house and this will evolve organically. If there is something special we will tell you in class in advance of the next one. Topics are subject to change at short notice (kids!). The plan for each session, presented by Caspian and Kashi and facilitated by Mama: - 45 mins in English followed by 15 mins in Chinese - 20 mins Caspian presents and shares what he’s learned, makes something for you to follow along and records it in his scroll (or you can just watch) - 20 mins Kashi's turn, as above - We answer questions/chitchat and say goodbye to English speakers and then switch to Chinese (of course English speakers are welcome to stay but the remaining part of the session will be conducted in Chinese) - 15 mins in Chinese, a repeat and summary of the English above For more about us: see https://www.doublebrothermovies.com/ This month: MONTH 2 EARTH and Microlife June 2025 1. Atmosphere: why do some planets have atmosphere and some don’t? 2. Caspi’s stone, obsidian, flint 🪨 3. The 4 elements and thinking about Disney’s Elemental film (Kashi) 4. Germs (Kashi) Upcoming Sessions Dates: 5 June 2025 to 26 June 2025 Total of 4 sessions • Thursday 5 June 4pm - 4:45pm London time • Thursday 12 June 4pm - 4:45pm London time • Thursday 19 June 4pm - 4:45pm London time • Thursday 26 June 4pm - 4:45pm London time Book nowLike
